Repaying student loans
Yes, you really do have to repay those loans. Here's how.
According to FinAid.org, two thirds (65.6 percent) of undergraduate students graduate with some debt. The average debt among graduating seniors is $19,202. The numbers are even worse for graduate students. FinAid.org provides a quick, easy-to-follow overview of the student loan process.
The ability to repay student loans with the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a key benefit for national service members. The $4,725 education award for a full-time year of service (or $9,450 for two full years) can make a substantial dent in most student loans, if not wipe them out completely. Add to this the possibility of putting loans into forbearance while serving, and AmeriCorps or VISTA becomes an attractive option for those who wish to serve their communities and happen to have student loan debt.
